On France

Joy has been to France more than a handful of times. Her first visit was to Poitiers to visit Erica, a close high school friend, who was studying there while Joy was in Germany. Unlike Joy, Erica lived with a host family, and the two enjoyed swapping stories about their different experiences. Erica introduced Joy to many of her new friends, and Joy loved the fact she got to kiss the cheeks of everyone she met, not once, not twice, but three times.

Joy's next several visits to France would be during her junior year abroad in college with the IES EU program. She made two trips to Strasbourg, one on a school field trip to the European Parliament and another more leisurely visit with dorm mates, Kate and Danny.

For Joy, though, no city in France can trump its bustling capital of Paris. It is her favorite city to be in at night. The way the city lights up is nothing short of magical. Joy's first visit to Paris was with the IES EU Program to the World Bank and OECD offices. Luckily, the group got a long weekend of down time in Paris and Joy chose to spend it checking out the Louvre and Eifel Tower, and window shopping at Printemps. Joy would return to Paris to visit Lidia's sister and family, and thoroughly enjoyed the more local flavor of that trip. Joy remembers being so content to join Celeste to go buy fresh vegetables for dinner at the local farmer's market and talking with her while she ironed sheets back home. Joy found beauty everywhere in Paris.

After college, Joy would return to Paris to celebrate Thanksgiving 2002. What more appropriate an occasion than Thanksgiving to be thankful for the opportunity to travel and to do so! On this trip, an amazing dinner at Buddha Bar stands out, as do visits to Notre Dame and the Palace of Versailles.
