To know that we know what we know, and to know that we do not know what we do not know, that is true knowledge.

On Poland

After the school year in Freiburg was over, Joy headed to Poland with her close friend, Agnieszka. The two loved their experience in Germany so much that as the train pulled away from Freiburg Central Station, they broke down and wept. It was one of those exceptional moments in life, where life demonstrates it must go on, whether you are ready or not.

Thankfully, Poland would turn out to be Joy's favorite place in Europe. Renata, Agnieszka's mom, met the two in Poznan. The three sat under the sun enjoying giant salads and later watched folk dancers in full on traditional garb prance around in Old Market Square. Back at Babcia's house in Walcz, exhaustion finally set in. Much to the chagrin of a curious house guest or two, Joy became best friends with the couch in the living room for many an afternoon.

One day Agnieszka introduced Joy to her childhood friend, Ania, and they all had a ball playing in the yard and listening to rap music like it was going out of style. They also got to go visit another friend, Mira, and her mom at their apartment which overlooked a giant marketplace, where the locals would go to buy fresh produce.

Lots of exploring was to be had in this small town. Joy remembers a walk through town which included a visit to an uncle's camera shop and a stroll through the local cemetery. The headstones in Poland are the most elaborate Joy has ever seen. She also remembers another beautiful walk around a lake and a quiet, breezy boat ride there.

Joy also got to see the port city of Szczecin and remembers walking on the concrete sidewalk at the harbor by the Oder River. Agnieszka, Renata, and Joy also ventured to Warsaw. Renata had an old friend there who was a photographer, and at one point, they would find themselves all chasing a peacock in a park!
